Jinan cathedral, built by the germans in 1907, is sided by a series of small buildings in which Alliance Francaise du Shandong asked us to renovate and transform a 400m2 space. The budget being very limited and the timing very short, we focused our efforts on substracting instead of adding. In those kind of projects it is sometimes just by deconstructing that you manage to actually build.

We demolished all the suspended ceilings, got rid of the doors and inside windows, opened the former corridor, punched walls where we needed in order to reconstruct circulations and retrieve the generous volumes the building had to offer. The wood beams that were carrying the ceilings were reused to build 7m high transparent polycarbonate partition walls separating the classrooms from the rest of the open space.

Instead of enclosing the library as a separated program, the whole school was intended as an open space mediatheque. Wherever you are, studying areas are surrounded by books, CDs, DVDs, computers or other educational means. The whole school is cafe, the whole school is a library, the whole school is an open space for learning.
