Shandong's Alliance Francaise asked BaO to design their new branch in Yantai University. The two classrooms and the multi-purpose space that were given by the university were in an overall good shape and were adjacent to a very large semi-indoor corridor. We thus focused most of the transformation efforts on the wall separating the classrooms and this collective corridor. We wanted this boundary to be porous and transparent in order to create a dialogue between the classrooms and the corridor (open classes), permit light and views to reach both sides, and create alcove-like spaces within the thickness of the wall.

:: Wall Strip ::

We perforated the existing wall in order to reshape existing openings and create new 'casements' within the wall. The 30 meter long wall was thickened (50cm) to create embedded benches or shelves either inside the classrooms or in the corridor, depending on the openings positions. The wall forms a continuous strip zigzagging between grounds and ceilings. The former enclosing boundary is transformed into a multitude of active thresholds, spaces and collective furniture. The loose strip advocates open education principles and unsealed classrooms.
