Shenzhen Development Bank planned to open an office branch in Foshan Guangdong in a newly built office block. We were asked to propose a 10 000m2 interior design with a Bank lobby on the ground floor and office spaces on the five upper floors. We wanted to challenge the reflex in China to solely design in plan. We thus started to work in sections in order to think with volumes rather than planar extrusions. The whole project is based on the idea of buildings within the building, a series of endemic parasites containing closed offices and meeting rooms generating in-between open space office.

:: Parasite ::
Instead of trying to match the existing structure, our design advocates the incongruities and accidents between interior design and building. In China, the production of a building is almost always separated in two phases : the architects design envelops and the interior designers fit the program within the space. By the time the so called zhuangxiu 装修 begins, many of the built elements have to be changed or demolished and the building can be in some cases completely remodeled. The parasitic interior design we proposed tries to extrapolate this phenomenon by litteraly rebuilding a series of buildings colonizing their architectural host.

:: Work in section ::
We wanted to assess the vertical relationships between departments and between the two basic conditions of closed and open spaces. Our blobbing volumes containing offices, meeting rooms and service cores, run from one floor to the other and adapt in shape with the area requirements. The blobs are mainly placed on the periphery and the corners in order to create big open collaborative platforms in the in-betweens. Our parasitic structures are sectionned by the building's curtain glass enveloppe. The facade becomes itself a sectional diagram of the building exhibiting the organs of the financial institution.
