Jishuitantheatre, on the north 2nd ring road in Beijing, wanted to transform their unused underground space into a second smaller auditorium. A theatre can be considered as a big "spectacle machine". Half of the building shelters machines for decors, lightning, sound, etc… Our project proposed to make the machinic backstage part of the show.

The machine theatre we proposed was equipped with two overhead cranes carrying two series of boxes containing seatings modules (25 seats each x8 = 200 seats). Those machines permitted to construct/deconstruct the seating/stage layout on demand. Each and every theatre troop could decide and adapt the spatial relationship between spectators and their representation, while also having the possibility to use the overhead cranes as part of their choreography. The space could ultimately be emptied to host exhibition or dancing shows. An intermission bar alongside a micro-theatre under the entrance staircases for screenings were created to complete the project.
