Stairs house is an experiment that all started from the idea of a furniture house. We studied how much influence furniture have on inhabitation patterns and why they should be treated as much more than mere "equipments" or decoration. We designed a house where furniture would be able to actually create space in the architectural sense.

Departing from the idea of an empty, almost generic, space that could be "filled" and transformed by hidden furniture, the concept of a hybrid staircase appeared. How could stairs become living room, kitchen, bathroom, or room, or even all of them at the same time?

The steps were converted into surprisingly long pieces of furniture that were able to be deployed in the empty space like the drawers of a cupboard. Platforms, shelves, sofas, dining table, benches, beds, bathtub, kitchen counters, etc… were all embedded in the stairs and could be pulled in or out when needed. When deployed, the empty space and the staircase mutated into a kind of hectic three dimensional house with functions spread both vertically and horizontally. The stairs house is an ever-changing space where time and usages keep redefining conditions and living experience.
