. . . . . BCLU Lounge . . . . .
BaO is working with furniture designer WanWu on an refurbishment for the Beijing Language and Culture University International Department. The project is a straightforward exercise on programming of spaces through the thickening of walls and creation of embedded functions in a single linear element. A "super-furniture" containing information niches, kitchenette, printing amenities, storage, videoconference equipment, coffee/tea bar, mobile partitions, lead the visitors from the lift lobby through the corridor and in the lounge/multipurpose meeting room. The floor, walls, furniture and ceiling of this latter is entirely covered in what seems to be a continuous surface of wood wrapping the whole space. Hidden functions in the walls of the super-furniture can be deployed in the space in unexpected ways with the same pleasure one discovers when opening an old jewelry box with its concealed drawers, mirrors, trays and embedded smaller containers.
