. . . Nine Peaks . . .
Atelier 100s+1 collaborated with BaO on a very ambitious project few kilometers north of Nanning city in south China. The site of the project was a beautiful agriculture land nested in the middle of karstic mountains on which the client wanted to build a mixed-used "art village" that would become one of the center of South East Asia art scene.
A consequent effort was made on trying to grasp what could realistically make such ambitious endeavour work and what type of programmatic strategy could be implemented. The programms were centered on a series of big facilities such as, for instance, an South East Asia school of Art, that were to trigger enough mommentum for the whole district's development and potentially for an artistic and intellectual plateform to emerge. The project also took into account the creation of a series of Nine peaks Art Festivals that were thought as recurrent temporary events triggering urban and artistic development.
The proposal also included rough planning sketches such as dispatched urban units or a continuous urban superstructure that were attempts to question the romantic consensus of "art villages" or straightforward urban zoning policies. Our objective was to perform a jump in scale and articulate direct architectural responses instead of urbanistic ones. Our somewhat polemical intention was to consider hyper condense and contained urban objects in the natural landscape as a way to radically requestion the approach on both rural and urban development and avoid sprawl of either village-like or suburban types of approaches.
